It was an early start for a few NSCC riders to make it out to Eastern Creek for a 7am start for the Judgement Day Race hosted by North Western Sydney Cycling Club. We were all nervous in the immediate lead up to the race as we had not had rain for something like 76 days and then the day before the race – rain. Fortunately it was a brisk, clear day that greeted us after a quick trip on the M2/M7.
Some of the assembled were nervous about the gradings and race divisions including Mr Mower who came up with a “dog ate my homework” excuse to get re-graded – well done! A suggestion to Club Members for future races would be to consult Archie before ticking the box as he may offer some sage-like wisdom – he did today!
Women’s Race – this was a handicap and the NSCC flag was flown in style by Deb, who finished strongly in the bunch. Kudos to Ruth-Anne for a gutsy ride, battling the wind solo.
A-Grade – With the money on offer, an impressive field included Stu Grieve who we witnessed inflicting some pain at a very fast pace as they ripped past us near turn two.
B-Grade - Mark Templeton and Andrew Stevenson who both finished strongly with the main pack. Unfortunately for Mark while he was pulling some big watts on the flats, the lack of hills gave him no chance to break away – Le Tape not too far away now mate!
C-Grade - The team assembled included Mark Withford, Paul Mower, Dave Edwards, Mick Hart, Nandika Samarawickrama, Minh Dinh and Ant Ryan. Our race started in pedestrian fashion and in the first few laps guys were actually braking through turn one. There were a couple of breaks however these got shot down pretty quickly. Some good work off the front by Mark, Mick and Paul kept it tidy with Dave, Ant and Minh saving themselves and staying out of trouble in the bunch. A fortuitous break had Ant in the lead pack and as agreed to in a team brief chaired by Paul at the start, saw the team commence “operation slow down and don’t do too much work” – a well-rehearsed ploy (aka Dash). Luckily the other teams including team Smurf didn’t work together and NSCC stayed away. We finished 1st (Ant), 3rd (Minh – in a solid demonstration of sprinting) and Paul took out the Prime and came away with some money too!
D-Grade – Dave O’Brien stayed with the main bunch including some ‘soon to be re-graded riders’ who rode away from the bunch. As always, solid riding and getting stronger every ride, Dave will soon be smashing it out in C-Grade.
Thanks to our trusty official photographer, Matt Johnston (tampering for West Head??) who expended as much energy as the riders covering all areas of the track performing photography duties.
A well run event on a fantastic smooth racing bitumen surface. Looking forward to getting out there again and racing with a few more NSCC riders.

What Ant does not mention is that he was solo off the front for the last 5 laps (approx 20km) and he won easily.
It was impressive!
