The mighty red and black peloton had 10 riders representing the club at the NSW masters championships held in Griffith over the weekend. Riders were competing across all three disciplines of road race, criterium and time trial.

While it was a long distance to travel, the event was well organised and credit to the local club and Cycling NSW for putting on a very successful championships. Every club rider over the age of 30 should seriously consider competing in state masters - apart from the intensity of the racing it's a great to get away for a weekend with your club mates.

Results were strong with many top 10 results and several gold medals as listed below. Richard Spinks completed the treble with gold in road race, crit and TT – excellent work as ever Richard.

The downside was our two MMAS1 riders, Harro and Andy, crashed 1km out from the finish with both in a strong position in the bunch. Both riders escaped serious injury but Harro will be sitting on his donut cushion for quite a while – their bikes were not so fortunate with Harro’s getting totalled and Andy’s drive train resembling a bike from Kmart.

Successful results were:

Richard Spinks – gold in all three disciplines
Craig Hobart – gold in TT, and top 10 in road race
Ross Hodgson – gold in TT, and top 10 in road race
Andrew Stephenson – top 10 in road race
Neil Matthews – two top 10s (TT and road race)
Archie Wilson – two top 10s (road race and crit)

The full list of club riders who competed is Harrison Morgan and Andy Logan in MMAS1, Simon Davies in MMAS3, Craig Hobart and Andrew Stephenson in MMAS4, Peter Beaumont in MMAS5, Neil Matthews in MMAS6, Archie Wilson in MMAS7, Ross Hodgson in MMAS8 and the venerable Richard Spinks in MMAS10.

First State Masters for me and it was a great weekend. Solid company and a very enjoyable weekend. Some quality banter as well. I agree with Arch, everyone needs to get to this event.

Great effort guys. Shame about the crash. Might have to join you next year. I'm old enough!
