Neil Matthews is riding from Sydney to Surfers to raise funds for Father Chris Riley’s Youth off the Streets (YOTS) programme

I am about to embark again on an epic bike ride from Sydney to Surfers to raise money for disadvantaged kids, many of whom live on the streets. This is the fourth time I’ve done this ride, and I’m pleased to say I’ve raised over $10,000 to date.

I need your help.

The ride is on the first week of May and every rider needs to raise much needed funds to help the kids going through the YOTS programme. Many friends, neighbours, work colleagues and customers supported my fund raising efforts last year which totalled around $3,500 … this year I would really appreciate your support again this year.

Why help YOTS?

Because they are out there every day trying to get kids off the street and back into the community. They reach out and offer support to kids when no one else will.

The answer to this question was made clear to me when I met a young guy in the YOTS programme on the ride a couple of years ago. His own circumstances meant that he had never owned a bike let alone considered that he might ride a bike from Sydney to the Gold Coast.

I met him going up the Border Ranges on a very challenging climb north of Kyogle and as we rode and chatted, he gave me a glimpse of life on the street … just imagine being a good looking 16 year old lad having to do unspeakable things just to survive. I had the opportunity to ride with him for about 45 minutes and after we topped the last summit, I thanked him for sharing his experiences and rode on. I don’t think that I will ever forget that discussion.

How can you help?

Whether you can afford $2 or $200, it will all help. I will do my part and ride my bike. And as before I promise to finish the bike ride!
